June 18- Prayer is the Work Aid

If we don't realize life is war, we won't know what Prayer is for.

Lord please make _________ path straight as they return home from a wonderful NYFLO ministry experience.

Each person on this team has experienced training, challenges, opportunities and fears.  Each component of what we did is essentially a tool for them/us to take back and apply in Houston.

We do not focus on a week long trip but we train and go on an experience like NYFLO to help equip us for a life time of service for God.

Day 6 Recap- So Much to Cover!

Training Videos, Madison Square Park, Union Square Park, Serendipity, and Stuff!

Training Vidoes-

Each training before the trip and each morning we were here in NYC our team went through a strategic Training that can be transferred to others.

The Mission statement for 290 Community Church says, “We exist to exalt Christ by Making Disciples that Make Disciples.”

These are very short and succinct videos that give an overview of our training.

Pictures, Pictures, Pictures!

So much to cover in pictures.  The girls here are leading a Bible Study from 2 Corinthians 5:16-21 (inside joke was they had to talk over a lawnmower and over a school’s outdoor music next door, they were troopers and we all had a laugh).  Encouragement is so important.  Such a powerful time writing down notes about what we have seen God do in our friends and families’ life.  Most folks keep their  notes for a long, long time.  We wanted to see two totally different parks with two totally different feels, one park is Madison Square Park and the other is Union Square Park.  Union Square is a total assortment of eclectic beliefs and free thinking (Free Advice, 6’7″ Jewish rappers, Hare Krishnah’s, Jesus Poster carriers).  We finished the evening at Serendipity and all enjoyed the famous Frozen Hot Chocolate.

June 17- Prayer is the Work. Pray for our discipleship.

Lord please show _________ that all authority to make disciples is in You (Matt. 28:18-20). In Jesus name, Amen.

Lord give ____________ a holy fear of you in all ways (Ps. 34:11). In Jesus name. Amen.

290 Community Church Mission Statement

We exist to exalt Christ by making disciples that make disciples.

If we get anything right it is to exalt Christ and then make disciples.  If we get these wrong, then we are sunk.  We believe this is our mandate.

Please pray for those who are participating in NYFLO.  They are being asked to seek out 3 others in the next 3 months to pass a baton of discipleship to.  There is a catch!  They are being asked to seek to ensure that those they pass the baton of discipleship off to also find 3 others.  The success of our discipleship is not that we are being discipled, it is not that we are making disciples, but it is that our disciples are making disciples that make disciples.  That is the essence of what the Great Commission is and what Paul challenged Timothy with, “The things you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will be able to teach others also.”  That is four generations of discipleship right there.

Day 5 Recap- A Day of Prayer!

A.C.T.S Prayer Time

Spending a great deal of time in prayer is somewhat difficult for many of us while others have experience in longer times of prayer.  Prayer is like a spiritual muscle, the more one uses it the stronger one gets.  I remember in high school how difficult bench pressing 135 pounds was but before I left high school it was very easy.  Now 135 is warm up weight.  Prayer is a lot like that.  For someone to spend 2-3 hours in prayer may seem like a ton of weight but if practiced from time to time, the weight actually becomes easier each time you work out that muscle.

Today we worked our prayer muscles.  We went through an acrostic that helped guide our time.  A.C.T.S- Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, and Supplication.  We spent the majority of the time in worship and praise of God.  We practiced thanksgiving and spent some time in asking God for help and sharing our short comings.  Finally, we prayed for 290 Community Church and for those who maybe far from God and those who are close to God.

Prayer Walk

Prayer Walk

We walked about 1 mile on a prayer walk through the streets of New York.  Prayer Walking can  be practiced anywhere.  Consider these ideas for your own prayer walk in Houston:

Attitudes of Prayer Walking-

Realize that we Prayer Walk before the throne in an attitude of worship. Exalting Jesus from the very place where we stand and walk (Look for things that HONOR GOD and worship God for those things).

We Prayer Walk amidst evil powers (Look for things that are more DARK than HONORING and pray that God opens eyes to God’s love and light).

We Prayer Walk around people so pray that God blesses them and opens their eyes and hearts to knowing God more fully (Pray that salvation spring up from the ground or that God would rend the heavens and come down).

Sources of Insight-

We can get insights for Prayer Walking through impressions that come by way of our natural senses. The Holy Spirit will use sights, sounds, and smells to flood your awareness and prayers with significance (Look for signs, posters, graffiti, carvings, statues, buildings, etc. that give you ideas of things for which to pray).

We can receive spiritual insight from the Lord.  As we are sensitive to Him, He can lead you to urgency for prayer.  Sometimes we meet with the Lord in the morning and God reminds us of the need for prayer in the afternoon (Look for ways to recall what God is teaching you and pray that for others).

Aids to Prayer Walking-

Pray Scripture.  Make sure to always have the Bible on hand during a Prayer Walk.

Pray in Obedience.  Be sensitive to God.  Be willing to be act as an answer to the prayer you have just given.

Praise and Focus on Jesus.  Jesus said, “If I be lifted up, I will draw all men to myself.”

Hang in there.  Don’t quit too early.  Practice Prayer Walking often.  We are in a spiritual battle.
One of the awesome things that happens in the hearts of those who consistently Prayer Walk is that they find their heart becomes committed to the places for which they have prayed.  The result is Spirit-filled acts of compassion and gospel proclamation.

June 16- Prayer is the Work Motivator!

Lord please show ________ that the weapons we fight with are not of this world but are very mighty (2 Cor. 10:3-5). In Jesus name, Amen.

Lord would you put a new song in __________ heart, a song of praise to God (Ps. 33:3, 40:3). In Jesus name, Amen.

Today we are working through a different type of ministry work, it is PRAYER.  We will spend more time in prayer than we have in a really long time.

From the Heart of Micaiah Bergoon

This NYFLO trip has been awesome! I have loved every moment, but there are three things that have been my favorite. First, being able to share the gospel to Clem. Clem is a girl from France and learning English in NYC for the summer. Sophie, Camilla, and I had the opportunity to tell her about Jesus, and she said it was the first time she had heard about Christian beliefs. She seemed to understand what we told her, but couldn’t “commit” to any religion right now. However, I pray she will continue to hear the gospel from other people, and one day will “commit” to Jesus as her Savior. Secondly, I enjoyed seeing the 9/11 memorial. It was my first time seeing it and I learned so much about that horrible day. Finally, I loved visiting Times Square Church and worshipping with fellow believers last night!

Training Times-

Each morning we have Bible Study and go through some discipleship training.  We are hoping to take this back with us to Houston, Texas.  2 Timothy 2:2 says, “And the things you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will be able to teach others also.”  Each person is being encouraged to find 3 people who they can disciple within the next 3 months in order to pass this idea of Making Disciples that Make Disciples on.  Life on life discipleship is the mission of 290 Community Church.

Tucked or Untucked: That is the question?

Poll of the Day- what looks better?

I am guessing that in some places you must tuck in, like at some work places and perhaps at weddings or other places but when there is not a rule and the dress code is not enforced, what looks better?  We had the discussion on a subway ride and wanted to see what others thought.  Is it a generation thing much like the Social Media Poll? (you can go there and vote still).  What if you are a little thicker in the mid section?  What if your shirt never stays in?  So many questions, enjoy the poll.

There are several videos and articles on this topic of tucked or not tucked.

June 15- Prayer is the Work Starter…

Lord I ask that you cause ________ to set their eyes on heaven where Christ is seated (Col. 3:1-4). In Jesus name, Amen.

Lord move in _________ to manage their time well in these evils days, making the most of every opportunity (Eph. 5:15-17). In Jesus name, Amen.

Who do you know that is lacking focus?  They seem distracted and their eyes are darting in so many directions instead of being set on Jesus?  Their eyes are a picture of their time management, all over the page.  Pray for them (it maybe yourself).   The important thing is to try and stay in FOCUS.

Day 3- Sunday Happenings

Randy Jones Giving a Summary of How to Know God’s Will (Instant Classic)

From the Heart of Randy Jones

Today was a physically trying day for me.  We went to Battery Park and had a gathering of our church.  I taught a lesson on knowing God’s will according to the scriptures.  Evangelism on the Staten Island Ferry was followed by an emotionally draining visit to the 9/11 Memorial Museum.  We finished the evening at Times Square Church where my soul was renewed by testimonies of Gods power to free people held in bondage.  Over and over I see Gods faithfulness in the midst of our weakness.

From the Heart of Zach Jones

Today our group took a quick round trip ferry ride to Staten Island .  We then went to the 9/11 memorial  for a tour of the museum and a few photos.  Once we got back, our group did a 15 minute devotional and prayed before heading to Times Square for the second time.  The group walked through the city until we found the Times Square church.  The Times Square church is an interdenominational church with powerful speakers and wonderful music. After hearing people share their stories about how they became Christians, we closed with prayer, and a few more songs. Finally, to finish the night, we ate dinner at the magnificent café!

From the Heart of Ethan Moody

I came to New York I wasn’t feeling too good and come to find out I had tonsillitis. I stayed behind on the first day everyone went out and it was kind of a bummer. My mom and I prayed for those who did go out and also prayed that I would be healthy enough to go and talk to people. Luckily I was able to get better and went to Central Park. I was paired with Scott Bronstad, and we had good conversations with friendly people but didn’t get very spiritual with anyone but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. I enjoyed being able to talk to everyone and learn about people.

Some Incredible Pictures from the DAY– (we saw Elvis)

June 14- Prayer is the Work Prayer!

I ask you, Lord, to prevent Satan from blinding _______ to the truth. (2 Cor 4:4, 2 Tim 2:25, 26) In Jesus name. Amen.

Lord allow __________ to have a pure heart, a good conscience, and sincere faith (1 Tim. 1:5). In Jesus name, Amen.

Who do you know that seems to be blinded for some reason?  Blinded because of the poor choices they are making.  Blinded because of being consumed with their kids, sports, education, job, family, instead of Jesus?  I was  just Facebook Messaging (is that a verb?) with a person today who is worried for a family member who is really making poor choices in their life.

Sometimes we get so incredibly distracted from knowing God intimately because we have a broken conscience which leads to masks and insincerity of faith.
