Caedmon’s Call has always had a wonderful effect on me. I saw them live in Jeff DeVerter’s Rivendell, in Houston, TX, studio before they were big time. They are probably one of my favorite bands of all time. Houston is digging out and I joined them yesterday and today. My new church, Cypress Bible Church is without power so the staff are going around and helping folks clean up the debris for those in need. I hope to have some pictures up soon to show you some of the devastation.
As I was raking my father in laws yard today, I was listening to the Hands of the Potter and was profoundly impacted by the words. Are there any songs that impact you every time you listen to them? This one ranks up there for me.
Here are the words and after reading them you should listen to it. I always think of my good friend Dale West (who is in Heaven now). God is not done with me yet…
Lord if i’m the clay
Then i’ve been left out in the sun
Cracked and dry, like the mud from the sty
Still clinging to the prodigal son
But I’m on my way back home
Yes I’m on my way back home
Into the hands (into the hands)
That made wine (wine) from the water
Into the hands (into the hands)
The hands of the potter
Lord if i’m the clay then
Let your living water flow
Soften up my edges, lord,
So everyone will know
But i’m on my way back home
Yes i’m on my way back home
And Lord, when you listen for the song of my life
Let it be, let it be, a song so sweet
Let it be, let it be, a song so sweet
Let it be…
Lord, if i’m the clay then lay me down
On your spinning wheel
Shape me into something you can fill
With something real
And I’ll be on my way back home
Yes i’m on my way back home
I love how the song goes through the process a Potter takes in defining clay into something of the Potter’s own thinking and for his purposes. Some for noble purposes and some for ignoble purposes. The value is in the Hands of the Potter not in the clay.
Where does God have you?
- Do you feel left out in the Sun?
- Do you feel like the Living Water is flowing?
- Do you feel like you are on God’s spinning wheel?

“How Deep the Father’s Love for Us” gets me every time. More often than not I am brought to tears when I hear this line:
Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice call out among the scoffers
I love this song! Awesome words! I had a chance to use it at church when we did a sermon series called “Shaped”. We had Josh Heim bring his potter’s wheel in and spin on stage each week. We ended the morning with this song on 2 of the Sundays. Lots of fun!
