WASHINGTON, D.C. — You better watch out. There is a new combatant in the Christmas wars.
Ads proclaiming, “Why believe in a god? Just be good for goodness’ sake,” will appear on Washington, D.C., buses starting next week and running through December. The American Humanist Association unveiled the provocative $40,000 holiday ad campaign Tuesday.
In lifting lyrics from “Santa Claus is Coming to Town,” the Washington-based group is wading into what has become a perennial debate over commercialism, religion in the public square and the meaning of Christmas.
“We are trying to reach our audience, and sometimes in order to reach an audience, everybody has to hear you,” said Fred Edwords, spokesman for the humanist group. “Our reason for doing it during the holidays is there are an awful lot of agnostics, atheists and other types of non-theists who feel a little alone during the holidays because of its association with traditional religion.”

The battle begins I guess…what are your thoughts about this AD campaign. I love to talk to folks who are atheists and say there is no God. One of my first questions is, “Describe for me the God that you don’t believe in.” Plus in the article, I thought it was impressive to note that, “how do we know what good is outside of God and His word?”

Man, the harvest is becoming more and more plentiful as the field just keep gettin bigger. The amount of work can be discouraging, but then - what an honor to be sent by the Lord of the harvest.
Little do they (the atheists) know that they might have just opened a big door for us. Since most Americans do believe in God, I think that this ad will make them think and then lead them to ask; “how good is good enough?” Wouldn’t that make a great t-shirt to make and wear to counter the ad?! Anyway, I just hope that we as Christians will be ready and willing to answer that question if someone asks it of us. Andy Stanley has a great book titled;”Since nobody is perfect, how good is good enough.” Maybe we should all have some of that book on hand and be ready to share it when the question is asked (along with the scriptures, of course).
“Our God is an AWESOME God” I for one am excited to see how God is going to work in this!
